Located 12 miles north of Albany, 10 miles south of Saratoga Springs, and 7 miles northeast of Schenectady in Saratoga County, Clifton Park encompasses the communities of Ballston Lake, Elnora, Flagler Corners, Grooms Corners, Rexford, Round Lake, Ushers, and Vischer Ferry. Ballston Lake is a hamlet in the northwest part of Clifton Park; Elnora is a hamlet north of Clifton Park Center; Flagler Corners is east of Clifton Park Center; Grooms Corners is southwest; Rexford is near the west town line and Mohawk River; Round Lake is in the northeast; Ushers is south of Round Lake on the Clifton Park-Halfmoon border; and Vischer Ferry is on Country Road 92 near Mohawk River in south Clifton Park. Clifton Park’s population is approximately 36,500.

History

Native Americans lived along the Mohawk River. The origin of Clifton Park’s name dates back to 1707, when Nanning Harmansen requested its name for a patent of land. In 1783, George Washington reportedly stopped at Fort’s Tavern before ferrying across the river. During the 1800s, the primary industries were mills, farming, ice harvesting, and apple orchards. John McIntosh (whose “Macintosh Red” apple rose to unprecedented fame) was a resident of Clifton Park. Clifton Park’s accessibility via the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and the Adirondack Northway in the early 1960s, bolstered its popularity and growth.

Clifton Park small-town charm offers residents locally-owned boutique shopping and eclectic dining opportunities. Favorite stores include Spoon & Whisk, a kitchen specialty shop, Karalina’s, a jewelry boutique, Artique Co-op, an antique shop, and East Line Books, an independent bookstore. Clifton Park has a number of parks, trails, and nature preserves, including Clifton Common, a 81-acre park, Veterans Memorial Park, a 141-acre park, King Crest Farms, a 41-acre protected farm, and Riverview Orchards, a 85-acre protected farm. Dwaas Kill Nature Preserve has more than 250 acres along Dwaas Kill. North Woods Nature Preserve has more than 80 acres located within Country Knolls neighborhood. The Vischer Ferry Nature & Historic Preserve is located east of Vischer Ferry and Vischer Ferry National Historic District.

The area is recognized as a “Heritage Hub” for Saratoga County. Kinns Road Park is 64-acre county forest. Zim Smith Trail is a heritage trail located in the northeast corner of Clifton Park. It starts in Halfmoon and follows English Road to the Village of Round Lake. Clifton Park Arena is a year-round ice skating and hockey venue. SportsPlex of Halfmoon has soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, and flag football. Clifton Commons has ball fields, basketball courts, a playground and skating arenas. Other town parks have access to cross-country ski trails. The Grange and Grooms Tavern are the town’s famous historic destinations.

Clifton Park’s schools have received exceptional Greatschools ratings.

Ellis Hospital is the area’s local hospital. Amtrak, Greyhound, and Adirondack Trailways provide bus and train transportation. Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) offers county public transportation. Albany International Airport is 20 minutes away, while Saratoga County Airport is 30 minutes from Clifton Park and provides regional air service. Clifton Park’s major roads are Interstate 87, NYS Route 146, and US Route 9.
